Course Description:
This course invites professional interpreters to watch Wicked: Part One and engage in a structured reflection on the ways social norms, group dynamics, and individual behavior influence perception, decision-making, and opportunities. Using guided questions, participants will analyze how characters are treated based on their differences, how advantages and influence affect outcomes, and how silence, compliance, or personal choices shape interactions. Through this lens, interpreters will explore connections between the film’s social dynamics and real-world professional contexts, including how assumptions, communication styles, and organizational norms can affect access, inclusion, and responsibility.
Educational Objectives:
Examine perceptions and treatment of individuals: Participants will analyze how differences, group membership, and social status affect how characters are treated and perceived.
Explore influence and social norms: Participants will identify how authority, communication, and social expectations shape behavior, opportunities, and decision-making.
Reflect on professional responsibility and personal practice: Participants will connect the social dynamics in the film to their own decisions, actions, and responsibilities as interpreters.
