Course Description:

This independent study uses selected episodes from the Netflix series Nobody Wants This to examine themes of power, privilege, oppression, identity, belonging, bias, and inclusion. Through guided reflection, participants will explore how family expectations, cultural traditions, religious identity, and social norms influence relationships and shape individual experiences.

As participants analyze the interactions between characters, they will consider how assumptions, stereotypes, and community expectations can impact a person's sense of belonging and influence opportunities for inclusion or exclusion. The course encourages thoughtful reflection on how power and privilege operate within interpersonal relationships and communities while fostering greater cultural awareness and empathy.

Participants will watch six selected episodes and complete written reflections after each episode, using guided questions to analyze the themes presented throughout the series.

Educational Objectives:

1. Identify examples of power, privilege, bias, and exclusion portrayed throughout the selected episodes.

2. Examine how cultural, religious, and family expectations influence the experiences and decisions of the characters.

3. Analyze how identity and belonging affect relationships and community inclusion.

4. Recognize examples of assumptions, stereotypes, and implicit bias demonstrated within the series.

5. Reflect on how increased awareness of power, privilege, and belonging can support more inclusive interactions in both professional and personal settings.
