Course Description:
Participants will view the 2012 film Dr. Seuss' The Lorax and engage in a guided critical reflection examining themes of power, privilege, oppression, access, advocacy, environmental justice, and social responsibility. Through analysis of the relationships between the Once-ler, O'Hare, the Lorax, the citizens of Thneedville, and the natural environment, participants will explore how systems of power influence decision-making, whose voices are prioritized or silenced, and how privilege can contribute to inequitable outcomes.
Educational Objectives:
Describe who has power in The Lorax and how they use it.
Identify examples of privilege and unfairness shown in the movie.
Discuss how the decisions of powerful characters affect others.
Explain how the Lorax and Ted advocate for those who are not being heard.
Reflect on lessons from the film about fairness, responsibility, and creating positive change.
