Course Description:

This course invites interpreters to explore Illumination’s The Grinch (2018) through a social-emotional and social-justice lens, examining how early experiences, internalized beliefs, and community dynamics shape identity and belonging. Through reflective writing, interpreters analyze the Grinch’s isolation, the impact of trauma on his worldview, and the subtle ways social norms and emotional privilege influence who feels included or overwhelmed. By studying acts of compassion, accountability, and transformation, especially through characters like Cindy-Lou Who, learners discover how communities can dismantle emotional barriers and foster healing. The course ultimately supports interpreters in developing critical thinking, emotional literacy, and a deeper understanding of how empathy and inclusion create stronger, more supportive relationships.

Educational Objectives:

1. Interpreters will analyze how early life experiences and internalized beliefs shape identity, behavior, and self-perception.

2. Interpreters will explore how empathy, inclusion, and community norms influence belonging and emotional well-being.

3. Interpreters will evaluate the Grinch’s transformation to understand accountability, healing, and the social factors that drive behavior.
